Orange chicken - panda express - THE BOTH THINGS THAT WE DON'T HAVE HERE IN MALAYSIA. well, orange chicken is kinda uncommon here I think since everywhere I go I only see lemon chicken and never orange chicken but it's fine if I'm wrong so
Ang mohs really like orange chicken - that's all they'll get at panda express so I figured, I NEED TO TRY IT. but I couldn't find any orange chicken here so it's back to home cooking.
Orange Chicken Recipe:
Marinate:
- 2 whole chicken drumstick and thigh (I personally like the thigh area compared to breast because it's more tender and juicy) - you can add however much chicken you want tbh, this is just a guidelines
- 1 egg
- 5 tbsp flour
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp light soy sauce
- 2 tbsp ABC sweet sauce
- 2 tbsp water
1. Cut your chicken up to bite sized pieces and then combine it with everything above.
2. Cover with cling wrap and put inside fridge for at least 30 minutes
3. Deep fry in oil for 8 - 10 minutes depending on how big your chicken pieces are.
4. + Points if you double fry it for extra crispiness
Orange sauce:
- 2 whole oranges
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp ABC sweet sauce
- 100ml water
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
1. Zest 1 whole orange and juice both oranges.
2. Add in oyster sauce, brown sugar, soy sauce, ABC sauce, and water into orange juice and zest. Mix until combined.
3. Over low heat, pour your orange mixture into your pan and let it simmer until it comes to a light boil.
4. Add in your cornstarch and give it a mix until the sauce thickens up slightly.
5. Add your chicken in and toss it until fully coated with the sauce.
6. Serve with scallions and sesame seeds on top (but I didn't have scallions so sesame seeds it is)
Notes:
- You can tweak the sauce yourself if you want it more salty or more sweet. I basically just eyeballed mine all the way and hope that it turned out the best and it did and I'm very satisfied and happy with it.
